Amid speculation about Klopp’s successor, Jose Mourinho’s presence in the stands at Craven Cottage stirred up rumors among fans about a possible managerial change.
Mourinho, who has been without a team since leaving Roma in January, has voiced his interest in returning to the Premier League.
Despite being linked with Newcastle, Mourinho’s previous interest in managing Liverpool has resurfaced, with reports suggesting his agent had approached the club before Rafael Benitez’s appointment.
Tony Barrett, currently Liverpool’s director of first team communications, disclosed Mourinho’s earlier attempt to secure the Liverpool managerial role.
According to Barrett, Mourinho’s agent met with Liverpool’s leadership, conveying the Portuguese manager’s strong desire to take charge of the club.
He stated: “The only thing I want is that the targets and objectives are set fairly by everyone involved.
“I cannot join a club where the objective is solely to win the title because of my history. No. What I want is for it to be fair.
“Do you think if I was managing a big Premier League club and we were sixth, seventh, or eighth in the table, I would still have a job? What I mean is, people should view me as they do others.
What’s crucial for me is that the club has set objectives and for me to be able to say I’m prepared to fight for them. I don’t want to say realistic, but at least somewhat achievable.
“When I joined Roma, no one was dreaming of European cup finals, and we achieved it. It’s not possible for me to join a club nearly relegated with the objective of winning the Champions League. It’s commendable, but it’s not fair.”
