Arne Slot Confirms Caoimhin Kelleher to Start in Carabao Cup Quarter-Final Against Southampton

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has announced that Caoimhin Kelleher will start in goal for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup quarter-final against Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium.

With Liverpool juggling a packed Premier League schedule in their bid to remain at the top of the table, Slot is set to rotate his squad for the cup fixture.

One confirmed change will see Kelleher step in for Alisson Becker, as the Brazilian is rested after recently returning from a two-month injury.

Slot Confirms Kelleher’s Selection

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Slot confirmed Kelleher’s role, saying, “Yes, we can.” He elaborated:

“Due to Alisson’s injury, Kelleher has already played more minutes than many others in the squad. This has been positive for him, and we’re lucky to have a second-choice goalkeeper who consistently steps up and performs when needed.”

Trusted in Domestic Cups

Kelleher has become a reliable choice for Liverpool in domestic cup competitions. During Alisson’s absence, the Irish goalkeeper earned widespread praise for his performances, with some even suggesting he should remain first choice despite Alisson’s recovery.

However, Slot has been clear about the club’s goalkeeping hierarchy, with Alisson firmly established as Liverpool’s No. 1. For now, Kelleher’s opportunities are largely confined to cup games or injury-related absences.

Uncertain Future at Liverpool

Kelleher’s future at Liverpool is uncertain. His national team manager, Heimir Hallgrimsson, has encouraged him to seek a move if he continues to struggle for regular game time.

With Giorgi Mamardashvili reportedly set to join Liverpool next summer, competition for the No. 1 spot will only intensify, potentially limiting Kelleher’s chances further.

Speculation suggests Kelleher may leave Liverpool in the near future, making appearances like the one against Southampton all the more significant.

Despite the uncertainty, Liverpool fans will undoubtedly appreciate his contributions while he remains at Anfield.

A Lasting Impression

Throughout his time at Liverpool, Kelleher has demonstrated his reliability, especially in high-pressure cup matches.

While his long-term future with the club remains in doubt, his performances have cemented his legacy as a dependable and talented goalkeeper.

As the Reds prepare for the quarter-final clash, Kelleher’s presence ensures that the team remains strong in goal, providing fans with confidence in his abilities as they aim to advance in the competition.
