Xabi Alonso has revealed his decision not to accept the role of Liverpool manager following Jurgen Klopp’s departure.

Despite strong speculation linking him to the position, Alonso opted to remain with Bayer Leverkusen, confirming his choice at a recent press conference.

Alonso cited several reasons for his commitment to Leverkusen. Under his leadership for 18 months, the club is on the verge of securing their first-ever Bundesliga title and remains competitive in the German Cup and Europa League, maintaining an unbeaten streak across competitions.

Explaining his rejection of the Liverpool opportunity, Alonso told TNT Sports, “There were various factors that led to my decision to stay at the club.

After one year, we are building a team and fostering a strong spirit here. The season has been excellent thus far, and we want to continue this journey together. I truly feel like a part of it.”

He further elaborated that the timing didn’t feel appropriate, reaffirming his full dedication to Leverkusen.

As Leverkusen prepares to defend their unbeaten record, they gear up to face West Ham in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final, aiming to establish an advantage for the return fixture in London.

Meanwhile, Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim has emerged as the frontrunner to succeed Klopp as the new Liverpool manager.
