Why Marc Guehi avoided a red card against Liverpool as the Premier League explains the decision

Gary Neville backed referee Craig Pawson’s call not to show Marc Guehi a straight red card in the second half of Liverpool’s clash with Manchester City at Anfield.

Liverpool players and fans were convinced Guehi should have been sent off in the 68th minute after bringing down Mohamed Salah just outside the penalty area.

The defender was only booked, despite appearing to tug Salah back as the forward drove through the right channel.

Pawson immediately awarded a free-kick, with VAR confirming the foul took place — and ended — outside the box, ruling out any penalty claims.

VAR then reviewed whether the yellow card should be upgraded to a red for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity, but quickly sided with the on-field decision.

Giving his view on commentary, Neville was adamant the officials got it right, saying: “No, no, no, no… it’s definitely not the denial of a goal-scoring opportunity.

“Salah’s not getting there. Dias is there — he’s going to get across. The ball’s too far ahead of Salah. They’ve reached the correct decision in the end.”

The Premier League later issued a statement confirming the officials’ ruling.
