Footage has surfaced showing Virgil van Dijk and André Onana involved in an incident during Liverpool’s 3-0 victory over Manchester United.
Liverpool dominated their rivals at Old Trafford, with Luis Diaz scoring twice and Mo Salah netting his 15th goal against United.
After back-to-back defeats to Brighton and Liverpool, Erik ten Hag’s team has dropped to 14th place in the league, earning only three points from three matches.
The match was frustrating for United, highlighted by Casemiro’s two costly turnovers that led to goals and Marcus Rashford’s decision to pass backward instead of taking a risk.
There was also a subtle interaction between Van Dijk and Onana that might have gone unnoticed by some viewers.
During corners, Liverpool’s captain positioned himself close to Onana, with Diogo Dalot trying to keep him away.
In response, Onana delivered a forceful elbow to Van Dijk’s stomach. Despite having cause to be upset, Van Dijk reacted playfully, mocking Onana as if he had been hurt.
The two exchanged words, but Van Dijk maintained a broad smile throughout, even as Liverpool celebrated another victory under Arne Slot.
Van Dijk also had a heated exchange with United’s Lisandro Martinez. Shortly after Liverpool’s first goal, Martinez, in frustration, made a reckless challenge on Dominik Szoboszlai, earning a yellow card while Szoboszlai remained on the ground.
Van Dijk then confronted Martinez, despite referee Anthony Taylor’s attempts to calm the situation, seemingly challenging him by saying, “Come try that with me.”
