A former Premier League defender has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 37.

Throughout his 18-year career, the right-back played for nine different clubs in the Premier League and EFL.

He is best known for being part of the Leicester City team that surprisingly won the Premier League title in 2016.

He made 133 appearances for the Foxes, 32 of which were during Claudio Ranieri’s historic season.

In December 2023, he joined non-league club Macclesfield but has now ended his career.

“Security, coaches, drivers—there are so many people working hard at every club, and I can’t thank them enough.

As a teenager, my goal was to play any minutes of professional football. I couldn’t have asked for anything more than to play over 400 games, win prizes, and create lifelong friends.

Finally, as the great Sir Matt Busby once stated, football is nothing without its followers.

To all the supporters of all the teams I’ve played for, thank you for your support. We had good and bad days, but knowing you had our back meant the world.

I am finally looking forward to what the future holds.”

Simpson came up through the ranks at Manchester United, where he made eight appearances before moving on loan to Royal Antwerp, Sunderland, Ipswich, and Blackburn.

“From my perspective, it was never offside—I saw it clearly. But I was instructed by senior officials to cancel the goal. I still don’t know why.
