The Spanish goalkeeper is now a free agent following his departure from Manchester United after 12 years with the club.
He left the team last summer, and although there were reports of him moving to Saudi Arabia, De Gea has not finalized a transfer to the Middle East.
Nottingham Forest tried to secure the experienced goalkeeper for the rest of the season but De Gea declined their short-term offer, opting to explore other opportunities.
In addition to pursuing De Gea, Forest also looked into acquiring Aaron Ramsdale from Arsenal. Before signing Matz Sels from Strasbourg, Forest had targeted Ramsdale, who had previously been a starter but lost his position to David Raya.
With the transfer deadline passed, Sels joined Forest on a three-and-a-half-year contract for £5.1 million. Now, Forest has a goalkeeper quartet consisting of Matt Turner, Wayne Hennessey, Odysseas Vlachodimos, and Sels.
De Gea’s decision to decline Forest’s offer suggests he is still searching for a new team.
Despite the transfer window being closed, De Gea remains a free agent and can sign with a team outside the transfer window timeframe.
During his time at Manchester United, De Gea played 545 games across all competitions and made significant contributions to the club’s success.
He has also represented Spain’s national team 45 times. Even though he’s currently without a club, De Gea remains an attractive option for teams due to his vast experience and impressive track record.
