According to The Athletic, Manchester United have made an initial offer of £35 million for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite to bolster their defense after a difficult season.
Manager Erik ten Hag sees Branthwaite as a suitable replacement following Raphael Varane’s departure.
Branthwaite had an impressive season with Everton, making 41 starts in all competitions, catching the attention of United.
Reports indicate personal terms have already been agreed upon between Manchester United and Branthwaite.
The proposed deal includes £27 million upfront and £8 million in bonuses. Despite their financial issues, Everton have rejected the bid, seeking a higher fee.
In addition to Branthwaite, Manchester United are also eyeing Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, according to Nacional. Zubimendi, who had a standout season with four goals and one assist in 45 games, has drawn interest from top clubs like Arsenal and Barcelona. United have joined the race, with Ten Hag looking for a midfield partner for Kobbie Mainoo.
The need for midfield reinforcements is urgent with Casemiro expected to leave and uncertainty surrounding Christian Eriksen’s future. Sofyan Amrabat’s loan is also unlikely to be made permanent.
Zubimendi’s composed style is seen as a perfect match for Mainoo, potentially strengthening United’s midfield.
The 25-year-old has a £50.5 million release clause, and United are reportedly preparing a £37.8 million offer.
Meanwhile, former Manchester United midfielder Paul Ince has suggested the club consider signing Joao Palhinha from Fulham.
Palhinha, who almost transferred to Bayern Munich last year, made 39 appearances for Fulham in the 2023-24 season and has been identified as a key player.
Ince believes Palhinha would be an excellent replacement for Casemiro at Old Trafford.
In a discussion with Football 365, Ince praised Palhinha’s suitability for Manchester United, highlighting his passing, tackling, and physical presence.
Ince said, “Joao Palhinha could replace Casemiro next season, without a doubt. … He’s perfect for Manchester United. He gets about the park. He can pass. He can tackle. He’s strong. He’s got a good size about him.”
Palhinha’s contract with Fulham runs until 2028, but his anticipated departure this summer makes him a viable target for Manchester United, potentially addressing their midfield needs alongside their other transfer pursuits.
