Liverpool seems to be falling behind in their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, with Real Madrid now leading the race for the young star.
Wirtz, who excelled in Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten Bundesliga title-winning campaign, has attracted interest from several top European clubs, including Liverpool. However, recent reports indicate that the Reds are facing significant challenges.
According to Marca, Real Madrid has secured two key agreements for Wirtz’s transfer in the summer of 2025.
The first agreement, involving Wirtz, his representatives, and Bayer Leverkusen, ensures he stays with the German champions until the end of the 2024/25 season.
The second agreement, a verbal one with Real Madrid, covers personal terms and sets the plan for Wirtz’s move to the Santiago Bernabeu in 2025.
Real Madrid’s president, Florentino Perez, has assured that financial constraints will not hinder the transfer, which could be worth €150 million (£127 million).
This development aligns with Real Madrid’s broader strategic interest in Leverkusen, including speculation about Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso potentially joining Real Madrid alongside Wirtz.
Alonso, who was considered for the Liverpool managerial role earlier this year, ultimately withdrew, leading to Liverpool appointing Arne Slot.
Currently, Wirtz is focusing on the European Championship in Germany, where he is a key player for the national team. Germany’s opening match is against Scotland, followed by games against Hungary and Switzerland in Group A.
