Liverpool has reportedly joined the competition for Benfica’s Joao Neves as they aim to outdo several Premier League rivals in securing the midfielder’s signature.
Portuguese outlet O Jogo claims that Liverpool has entered the fray alongside Manchester United and Chelsea in pursuing the 19-year-old talent.
Last summer, Liverpool revamped their midfield with the acquisitions of Dominic Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch.
However, the club is now seeking another defensive midfielder, a role Neves could potentially fill.
Manchester United has expressed long-standing interest in the Portuguese prodigy, with plans to pursue him this summer, as per reports from Manchester Evening News.
Fabrizio Romano revealed that Manchester United has extensively monitored the player, noting Neves’s €120m release clause in his current contract with Benfica.
With Neves contracted to Benfica until 2028 and the hefty release clause in place, enticing him away from Portugal will be a challenging task.
While Manchester United views him as a direct successor to Casemiro, Liverpool’s plans for Neves remain uncertain, particularly given the impressive performances of Wataru Endo in the defensive midfield role.
