Liverpool are reportedly working on signing Porto midfielder Alan Varela.
According to journalist Luis Fregossi from Mundo Boca Radio, the Reds have made a formal offer for the 23-year-old defensive midfielder, and the Argentine international is expected to join the club before the transfer window closes.
Liverpool has been pursuing Varela for some time, having first inquired about him in April. Varela is highly regarded across Europe and could be a valuable addition to Liverpool’s squad.
The club is in need of a quality defensive midfielder this summer, especially after using Alexis Mac Allister in that role last season, though the Argentine is better suited to a more advanced position.
While Liverpool brought in Wataru Endo from Stuttgart last season, they still require a player of higher caliber to compete for major trophies.
Varela, with his proven quality in Portuguese football and his physical and technical attributes, could be that player. His arrival would strengthen Liverpool’s midfield, offering better protection to the defense and giving more freedom to the creative players.
Joining a club like Liverpool would be an attractive opportunity for Varela, and he will likely aim to make an immediate impact in the Premier League.
Liverpool is now focused on finalizing the transfer before the window closes today as they prepare to compete for major honors this season.
