Liverpool’s pursuit of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi has suffered a significant setback.

The Reds had identified the Spanish midfielder as their top transfer target, with manager Arne Slot keen on strengthening his midfield.

Despite Jurgen Klopp securing four midfielders during the last summer transfer window, Slot was eager to add another player in that role.

However, Zubimendi has opted to remain with his boyhood club, Real Sociedad, and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has explained why. Romano shared on his X account:

“Martín Zubimendi turns down Liverpool, just as he did with Bayern and Arsenal in recent years.

“His love for Real Sociedad is unwavering, and he’s staying; even considering a new deal.

“Sociedad’s contract offer is significantly lower than Liverpool’s.”

Zubimendi’s deep affection for Real Sociedad is the reason he declined the Premier League giants.

With less than three weeks remaining before the transfer window closes, Liverpool must now rethink their strategy to address their squad’s needs.

As the season kicks off, Liverpool are yet to make a new signing, and fans are eagerly waiting for the club to bring in reinforcements.

It remains uncertain how the club will proceed after being turned down by the Euro 2024-winning midfielder.

The Reds begin their Premier League campaign against Ipswich on August 17th, as Slot continues to wait for a new addition to the squad.
