Arne Slot suffered only his second defeat as Liverpool head coach, with his side falling 1-0 to Tottenham in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.

While Liverpool’s performance in north London was far from their best, the controversial nature of the decisive goal has left a bitter aftertaste.

Lucas Bergvall, who was already on a yellow card, avoided a second booking after a foul on Kostas Tsimikas. Moments later, the Spurs midfielder scored the match-winning goal, firing past Alisson Becker.

The incident infuriated Slot and the Liverpool coaching staff, with assistant coach Sipke Hulshoff receiving a yellow card for his heated protests following the goal.

Slot’s Reaction at Full-Time

At the final whistle, BBC Sport’s Nizaar Kinsella noted Slot’s composed approach to the officials. Despite his frustrations, the Liverpool boss chose to shake hands with referee Stuart Attwell and his assistants before leaving the pitch.

Kinsella remarked:

“Few managers would handle such a situation so calmly. Slot briefly showed his frustration and earned a booking but ultimately approached the officials with restraint, while Liverpool players, led by Virgil van Dijk, voiced their anger over Bergvall’s controversial goal.”

A Display of Composure

Slot’s ability to remain composed in such a contentious situation is commendable. He had every reason to vent his frustration, yet he chose to express his displeasure respectfully.

However, the decision not to show Bergvall a second yellow card remains baffling, with the referee avoiding any need to justify his actions, a luxury managers don’t enjoy after a poor result.

While Liverpool’s overall performance on the night was below par—with notable let-offs including an Alisson error and a disallowed Dominic Solanke goal for a marginal offside—the manner of their defeat has understandably sparked outrage among fans.

Once again, a trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium ends in controversy, leaving serious questions about officiating.
