James Garner, the English midfielder now at Everton, recently discussed his departure from Manchester United and his candid conversation with Erik ten Hag, the current United manager.
Garner, who spent 13 years at Manchester United, left in 2022 after securing a £15 million transfer to Everton.
Before his exit, he made seven appearances for the club he had supported since childhood.
A direct conversation with Ten Hag, who had just taken over as manager that summer, played a significant role in Garner’s decision to seek new opportunities.
In a 2023 interview, Garner explained how his talk with Ten Hag influenced his move from Old Trafford.
He described Ten Hag as both kind and strict, highlighting the Dutchman’s disciplined and no-nonsense approach to team management.
Garner shared that the discussion about his future left him disheartened. “Ten Hag is kind but very rigorous,” Garner said.
“He doesn’t tolerate defying team rules. He’s straightforward and will address mistakes firmly.”
During the conversation, Garner asked Ten Hag if he saw him as part of United’s future and if he would get regular playing time.
Unfortunately, the response wasn’t what Garner had hoped for.
“I asked him directly about my role and future in the team,” Garner recalled. “The conversation didn’t go as I expected, so I decided to move on.”
Garner’s decision followed an impressive loan spell at Nottingham Forest during the 2021-22 season, where he played a key role in their promotion to the Premier League.
His performances attracted interest from other clubs, and the timing felt right for a permanent move away from United.
Although his connection to United was strong, Garner realized his future lay elsewhere.
Everton offered more regular playing time and development opportunities, prompting him to join the Merseyside club.
Ultimately, Garner’s choice was driven by his desire for more playing time, something he felt uncertain about under Ten Hag’s management.
Since joining Everton, Garner has been a promising addition to the squad and continues to grow in the Premier League.
While his exit from United was bittersweet, Garner remains optimistic about his future, focusing on developing his career and contributing to Everton’s success.
