Liverpool’s momentum took a hit after their 2-2 draw with Man United, suffering a 3-0 defeat against Atalanta in the Europa League quarter-final first leg at Anfield. This defeat, their first at home in 14 months, dealt a significant blow to their Europa League hopes.

Jurgen Klopp made six changes to the lineup, resulting in a mixed performance from Liverpool. Early in the game, Caoimhin Kelleher made a crucial save to deny Atalanta’s Mario Pasalic a goal.

Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo created several chances for the hosts, including a near miss by Darwin Nunez. Harvey Elliott, replacing Mo Salah, came close to scoring with a fantastic shot that hit the crossbar and post.

Atalanta took the lead through Gianluca Scamacca, who capitalized on a defensive error. Despite Atalanta’s threats, Liverpool couldn’t equalize, ending the first half 1-0 down.

Klopp made halftime changes, introducing Andy Robertson, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Salah. However, Liverpool struggled to find the net, with Nunez missing another chance. Scamacca extended Atalanta’s lead to 2-0, taking advantage of Liverpool’s defensive disarray.

To add urgency, Klopp shifted to a 4-2-4 formation, bringing on Diogo Jota. Although Salah scored, it was disallowed for offside. Atalanta’s Mario Pasalic then capitalized on a loose ball, sealing their victory with a third goal.

This loss was Liverpool’s first home defeat since February 2023, intensifying their disappointment after a tough night at Anfield.
