Liverpool Keen on Florian Wirtz, but Leverkusen Star Plans to Stay for Another Year
Liverpool has shown strong interest in German international Florian Wirtz, a standout player under Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen.
However, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Wirtz intends to remain at Leverkusen “for at least one more year,” despite speculation linking him to Liverpool.
Romano explained, “Florian Wirtz has made it clear that his focus is on Bayer Leverkusen and the upcoming Euros.
There are no ongoing negotiations, and sources close to him believe staying another year is the best option. While nothing is ever certain in football, things are quiet for now.”
The 20-year-old has been in outstanding form, scoring 28 goals in 36 appearances across all competitions this season.
Wirtz’s future could be closely tied to his manager’s decision. In February, Christian Falk reported for CaughtOffside: “Florian Wirtz is crucial for Alonso and thrives under his system.
If Alonso stays, Wirtz is likely to remain beyond 2024. However, if Alonso moves to Liverpool, Wirtz could follow.”
This scenario creates an intriguing possibility for Liverpool fans, especially if Alonso emerges as a successor to Jurgen Klopp.
Whether Liverpool would be prepared to meet Leverkusen’s valuation for Wirtz remains uncertain, given their other transfer priorities. However, it is a situation worth keeping an eye on.
