Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has admitted that he was tempted by interest from the Saudi Pro League but affirmed his commitment to staying with Liverpool and potentially signing a new contract.
Widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s top goalkeepers, Alisson has achieved significant success since joining Liverpool from Roma in 2018, winning the Premier League, Champions League, and various other titles with the club.
In May, reports emerged that Saudi Arabian clubs were targeting the 31-year-old Brazilian, along with Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes, as key transfer targets for the summer window.
However, Alisson has now revealed that despite being tempted by a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, he ultimately chose to remain at Anfield and continue playing under Liverpool’s new manager, Arne Slot.
In an interview with *The Times*, Alisson confirmed the Saudi interest but expressed his desire to honor his current contract with Liverpool, possibly even extending it. “Yes, they had interest.
I want to honor my contract and finish my contract here or make a new one. I am really happy here. My family is happy,” he said.
He acknowledged that while the financial offers from Saudi clubs were appealing, he never engaged in detailed negotiations. “When you hear about the numbers other players are getting, you are naturally a bit intrigued,” he admitted.
Despite the temptation, Alisson emphasized that his focus remains on his passion for football and his commitment to Liverpool. He noted that while financial considerations are a part of the game, he is not ready to move at this time.
“You play football for love, it’s what you enjoy doing, but it’s also our profession, and we want to make the most of our careers. I’m open to that personally, but not now. Now is not the time,” he clarified.
Alisson also mentioned that while he is dedicated to Liverpool, he remains open to future discussions if the club decides to consider offers for him.
“As long as I’m under contract here, my focus is on Liverpool. If the club wants to negotiate [to sell] me, then that’s a different conversation,” he said.
Ultimately, Alisson’s decision was influenced by his excitement about the new chapter at Liverpool under Slot’s leadership.
He expressed enthusiasm for the fresh start and the potential accomplishments the team could achieve this season. “When the Saudi interest came, I couldn’t ignore it without thinking.
But my decision was always to stay and focus on what we can achieve in this new beginning, and I’m really excited about that. We’re starting fresh with new energy and looking forward to what this season will bring.”
