Joe Gomez’s future at Liverpool is now uncertain after being left out of Arne Slot’s squad for the season opener against Ipswich Town.
The England international, who has previously been linked with a move to Eddie Howe’s Newcastle, might still find himself at a new club before the transfer window closes on August 30.
James Pearce of The Athletic reports that the center-back’s future is now “increasingly uncertain.”
Liverpool has yet to make a senior signing this summer, although a deal is reportedly in progress for Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Could Joe Gomez leave Liverpool this summer?
Fans may have reason to be concerned if Gomez is indeed set to depart during this window.
With Joel Matip leaving as a free agent, Liverpool arguably needs additional backup. Losing a versatile player like Gomez would raise questions about the potential long-term impact on the team’s defense.
Though the squad has depth with Virgil van Dijk, Jarell Quansah, Ibrahima Konate, and Sepp van den Berg (assuming Nat Phillips is sold), the former Mainz loanee isn’t quite at Gomez’s level.
While a surprise move could happen, it would seem reckless to let Gomez go without securing a suitable replacement.
