Following Manchester United’s dramatic 3-2 win over Ipswich Town, club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy has criticized manager Rúben Amorim’s substitution decisions.
Van Nistelrooy questioned why Amorim chose to substitute a key performer instead of Joshua Zirkzee, arguing, “Why is he taking him off instead of Zirkzee? He was clearly better during the match and would have scored if given the chance.”
The criticism comes amid concerns over Zirkzee’s form since his £36.5 million move from Bologna. The Dutch striker has struggled at Old Trafford, managing just three goals in 26 Premier League appearances this season.
Amorim’s substitution choices have sparked debate before, notably when he replaced Zirkzee just 33 minutes into a match against Newcastle United.
At the time, Amorim defended his decision, stating that he was considering both the team’s needs and the player’s struggles.
Despite Amorim’s justification, van Nistelrooy and others argue that continuing to prioritize an out-of-form Zirkzee over more effective players could hinder United’s progress.
