Jurgen Klopp declined a last-minute offer from FSG President Mike Gordon to prolong his tenure at Liverpool in a phone conversation. Despite Gordon’s attempt, Klopp, who has been with Liverpool since 2015 and achieved numerous accolades, including the club’s first Premier League title, stood firm in his decision to leave.
The potential departure of Klopp prompted Liverpool to explore replacements, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso emerging as the frontrunner. Although FSG entertained the idea of retaining Klopp by offering financial incentives, the German manager reaffirmed his commitment to leaving.
Klopp’s departure will not only impact Liverpool but also lead to the exit of key staff members, including assistant managers Pepijn Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, elite development coach Vitor Matos, and sporting director Jorg Schmadtke after the January transfer window.
