Vinícius Júnior netted twice as Real Madrid secured an exciting derby victory over rivals Atlético Madrid, cutting Barcelona’s lead at the top of La Liga to four points.

Despite trailing 1-0 at halftime, Real mounted a strong second-half comeback to take control of the match. However, they had to endure late pressure after Federico Valverde received a straight red card for a challenge on Álex Baena, with whom he has a past rivalry.

Ademola Lookman had earlier given Atlético the lead against the run of play, finishing from close range following a clever backheel by Giuliano Simeone, son of coach Diego Simeone.

Real equalized when Vinícius converted a penalty after Brahim Díaz was fouled by Dávid Hancko. They then took the lead through Valverde, who capitalized on a defensive error to beat goalkeeper Juan Musso. At that point, Álvaro Arbeloa’s side appeared to be in full control.

But Atlético responded when Nahuel Molina fired a brilliant 25-yard strike into the top corner to level the score, momentarily quieting the Santiago Bernabéu.

Vinícius, however, restored Real’s lead just six minutes later, curling in the decisive goal after linking up with substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold—marking his 10th goal in 11 games. Alexander-Arnold, recently left out of the England national team squad, impressed after replacing Dani Carvajal in the 64th minute.

Jude Bellingham also returned in the second half after a 10-match absence due to a hamstring injury and is expected to feature under Thomas Tuchel in upcoming friendlies against Japan and Uruguay. Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappé came off the bench as part of Real’s star-studded squad.

Valverde’s late red card shifted momentum, allowing Atlético to press forward. Julián Álvarez came close to equalizing, only to see his effort strike the post.

In the end, Real held on to secure their first La Liga win over Atlético since September 2022. Earlier that day, Barcelona had extended their lead to seven points with a 1-0 victory against Rayo Vallecano.
