Former FA technical director identifies manager as potential successor to Gareth Southgate.
Former FA technical director Les Reed has chosen his preferred replacement for England manager Gareth Southgate.
Southgate has received a lot of criticism recently, putting his career as England manager in jeopardy, especially after England’s World Cup 2022 departure at the hands of France.
And, according to Les Reed, England Under-21 manager Lee Carsley should take over for Southgate if the country is to avoid wasting another great generation.
He stated (as reported by The Sun):
“Gareth transitioned a lot of U21 players into the set-up because he knew them.”
“If we don’t consider Lee Carsley, we shouldn’t have considered Gareth Southgate.”
“We had a team capable of winning the World Cup, but we failed to capitalise on that talent.” We chose the celebrity/hobby management approach.”
“Don’t get me wrong: if Pep Guardiola wants the job and is committed to it, we know he has the ability to bring out the best in players.” But it’s not a side hustle. It’s not as simple as saying, “I’ve won everything; I’ll try my hand at international football.” That has happened previously.”
In the summer, Carsley led England Under-21s to their first European title in 19 years, defeating Spain 1-0 in the final.
