Liverpool secured a hard-fought 1–0 win away at Sunderland, handing the hosts their first home league defeat of the season.
It was a game that required patience and control from the visitors. Liverpool dominated possession for long periods but had to work tirelessly to break down a disciplined and energetic Sunderland side.
From the start, Liverpool looked calmer and more purposeful in their play, moving the ball quickly and trying to stretch Sunderland’s defence.
The home team, however, stayed compact and organised, limiting clear opportunities and forcing Liverpool to rely on long-range efforts and set pieces.
Florian Wirtz was Liverpool’s main creative threat in the first half. He forced a strong save from goalkeeper Robin Roefs with a powerful shot from distance and later hit the post with a smart left-footed effort after creating space inside the box.
Despite controlling the game and winning several corners and free kicks in dangerous areas, Liverpool couldn’t find a goal before halftime. Sunderland’s defensive discipline ensured the score remained level at the break.
After halftime, Sunderland showed more attacking intent and pushed further up the pitch in an attempt to unsettle Liverpool and create chances. While their effort increased, they still struggled to break through Liverpool’s organised defence.
Instead, it was Liverpool who made the breakthrough just after the hour mark. Mohamed Salah delivered a dangerous corner into the six-yard box, causing confusion in the Sunderland defence.
Virgil van Dijk rose highest to head the ball, and during the scramble that followed, Habib Diarra accidentally turned it into his own net under pressure.
Now behind at home for the first time in the league this season, Sunderland pushed forward in search of an equaliser.
However, they failed to create any clear chances, as Liverpool stayed compact and managed the closing stages well, slowing the game down and protecting their lead with experience.
There was a concern for Liverpool late on when Wataru Endo, who had performed solidly at right-back, went off with an ankle injury and had to be helped off the pitch.
Despite that setback, it was an important three points for Arne Slot’s side. The win strengthens their position in the table and closes the gap to fourth-placed Manchester United and fifth-placed Chelsea in the race for Champions League qualification.
