Virgil van Dijk has shouldered responsibility for the critical mistake contributing to Liverpool’s defeat against Arsenal. In the aftermath of the match, where Arsenal secured a 3-1 victory, narrowing the Premier League leaders’ advantage to two points, Van Dijk acknowledged his error.

The calamitous sequence included Bukayo Saka’s opener, an own goal from Gabriel just before halftime, and a defensive lapse in the second half that allowed Arsenal to regain the lead. Van Dijk, attempting to block Gabriel Martinelli, allowed the ball to bounce, creating an opening for the Arsenal forward.

Reflecting on the moment, Van Dijk admitted the pain it caused, acknowledging he made an incorrect decision by not promptly clearing the ball. He took full responsibility, stating, “I should have done better and made a better decision, and it hurts.

Especially for me but the rest of the team. It was a big turning point.” Van Dijk expressed determination to recover and ensure such mistakes do not happen again, emphasizing accountability and a commitment to avoiding future errors.
