Footballwave reports that Manchester United is expressing a strong interest in securing the services of Ivan Provedel from Lazio. The 29-year-old goalkeeper has gained a notable reputation in Serie A and has emerged as a pivotal player for Italy’s national team. This season, Provedel has notably distinguished himself as the most goal-scoring goalkeeper worldwide.
He notably scored a crucial goal during Lazio’s Champions League group stage, enabling them to clinch a draw against Atletico Madrid and progress to the last-16 stage. This was a rare achievement, marking only the third instance in Champions League history where a goalkeeper scored during open play.
Provedel’s prowess in scoring was previously on display during his loan stint at Juve Stabia in 2020 when he scored a late equalizer. Interestingly, he initiated his career as a striker and amassed an impressive total of 27 goals for Pordenone’s youth team before transitioning into a professional goalkeeper.
While Manchester United has shown interest in acquiring Provedel, Lazio’s valuation of €35 million appears to be a hurdle for the January transfer window. However, United is contemplating monitoring his performance for a potential transfer in the upcoming summer.
Meanwhile, Andre Onana’s tenure at Manchester United has not lived up to expectations following his €51 million move from Inter Milan. Despite performing well at Inter in the Champions League and being praised as an exceptional ball-playing goalkeeper, Onana has struggled at Old Trafford, making significant errors in losses against Galatasaray and Bayern Munich.
Presently, Manchester United is lagging behind in the Premier League and has been eliminated from European competitions and the League Cup. Pursuing Provedel indicates the club’s necessity to fortify key positions, especially in the goalkeeping domain. As they strategize for future transfer windows, particularly the summer transfer window, United aims to address squad deficiencies and reestablish competitiveness across various tournaments.
