Unexpected European side moves into position to pursue Mo Salah

A possible summer transfer for Mohamed Salah is starting to quietly take shape, with reports in Italy suggesting Roma are weighing up a bold move to bring the Liverpool winger back later this year.

La Repubblica claims the Serie A club have placed Salah high on their list of targets for the next transfer window, although any formal move would have to wait until the summer because of registration rules.

Roma have already used all of their non-EU slots for the current campaign, which rules out a January transfer regardless of the player’s availability.

Instead, the club are said to be assessing whether a deal would make sense financially and competitively, potentially allowing the 33-year-old to return to Italy, where he previously shone with Fiorentina and Roma earlier in his career.

    Roma eye Salah return

From Roma’s perspective, the attraction is clear. Even at this stage of his career, Salah remains one of the most reliable wide attackers in Europe, continuing to deliver goals and assists at elite level.

His experience and consistency would make him a natural leader in a Roma side still aiming to close the gap on the top teams in Serie A.

At the same time, talk of a big-money move to the Middle East has eased.

iNews reports that Saudi Pro League clubs have pulled back from pursuing Salah during this window, despite strong interest in previous seasons.

While that interest could return in the future, there is currently no expectation of an imminent offer from Saudi Arabia.

Liverpool yet to decide on Salah’s future

From Liverpool’s viewpoint, the situation remains finely poised.

Salah is still an important figure both on and off the pitch, but with his role gradually shrinking under Arne Slot and the player himself having voiced concerns about his minutes, a departure later this year cannot be ruled out.

Those close to Salah suggest he is in no hurry to decide his next step and intends to review his options at the end of the season.

A move back to Italy — particularly to a club he once played for — would carry emotional weight, though it is not yet clear whether he would be keen on leaving Anfield for that reason alone.
