Liverpool and Portugal international Diogo Jota has tragically died in a car accident while spending time off during the summer break.
The fatal incident occurred on the A-52 motorway in Zamora, Spain, and also claimed the life of his 26-year-old brother, André, who played for Penafiel.
According to reports from Marca, Jota and his brother were traveling together when the crash occurred shortly after 12:30 AM on Thursday night.
The emergency services in the Castilla y León region, including the 112 operations room, received multiple calls reporting a vehicle in flames following a crash.
Authorities including the Traffic Civil Guard, local firefighters, and emergency medical teams rushed to the scene.
Sadly, when the Medical Emergency Unit and health staff from the Mombuey center arrived, they confirmed both brothers had died at the scene.
A statement released by emergency responders confirmed the vehicle was a Lamborghini that had veered off the road and caught fire, reportedly after suffering a tyre blowout while trying to overtake another vehicle.
This heartbreaking event comes just two weeks after Jota celebrated his wedding to longtime partner Rute Cardoso in Porto, sharing joyful wedding photos with their three children. The post was captioned, “June 22, 2025. Yes to forever.”
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and made 182 appearances for the club, scoring 65 goals and providing 26 assists. During his time at Anfield, he helped the team win a Premier League title and was a vital figure under both Jürgen Klopp and new manager Arne Slot.
Born in Porto, Jota began his career at Gondomar before being signed by Atlético Madrid in 2016. He later spent time on loan at Porto and then joined Wolves, where his performances caught the eye of Liverpool.
