Their 3-2 victory over Southampton allowed the Reds to take advantage of Manchester City’s unexpected 4-0 loss to Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium.
With the 2024/25 season almost a third of the way through, it’s a good time to assess the situation.
Liverpool looking strong heading into Man City clash
The chance to increase their lead to 11 points when Manchester City visits Anfield in early December is significant.
While an unexpected victory for City at Anfield could shift the momentum, for now, Liverpool is in a favorable position.
Currently, Opta’s supercomputer gives Liverpool a 69.5% chance of winning the Premier League title at the end of the 2024/25 season.
Liverpool must take advantage of City’s struggles
It’s hard to believe that Guardiola’s side is currently on a five-game losing streak. City is in a state of disarray, which could trigger one of their signature winning runs in the second half of the season.
In the meantime, Liverpool must maintain their own form and ensure they keep a strong lead going into December, knowing that City may well bounce back.
Under Arne Slot, Liverpool has become the most well-rounded team in the Premier League this season and is in an excellent position (barring the return of a few injured players) for the upcoming showdown.
This is a rare opportunity for the Reds to put more pressure on City as the title race heats up.
