Everton fans were outraged when referee Simon Hooper appeared to be ignoring the primary VAR monitor while overturning his decision to award Dominic Calvert-Lewin a penalty against Brighton on Saturday.
In the second half of Everton’s 3-0 defeat, Lewis Dunk seemed to foul Calvert-Lewin, which led to a penalty that could have helped the team level the score.
However, after being called to review the incident, Hooper reversed his decision, angering many supporters who called the ruling “shocking” and believed it was a clear penalty.
The situation worsened when the primary monitor only displayed Premier League and generic VAR logos instead of showing a replay, prompting Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to confront the referee.
The Premier League later confirmed to Mail Sport that Hooper had to view the incident on a backup monitor, as stated in their match report.
