As we near the halfway point of February, there is still no indication of new contract agreements for Liverpool’s trio of expiring stars.
That doesn’t mean the club has given up hope of securing fresh deals for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, or Mohamed Salah.
Van Dijk himself dismissed claims that his future is already decided, telling reporters: *“What the future brings, I have no idea. Anybody who says they know it – they are wrong.”
This appeared to be a response to Paul Merson’s recent assertion that all three players are likely to leave Anfield this summer. However, with the clock ticking towards the end of the 2024/25 season, uncertainty remains.
Liverpool Still in Talks with Van Dijk’s Representatives
Fabrizio Romano provided a positive update after Liverpool’s 4-0 (4-1 aggregate) win over Tottenham in the Carabao Cup semi-final.
The Italian journalist confirmed that Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes was seen sitting alongside Van Dijk’s agents during the match, reigniting speculation about ongoing contract discussions.
Speaking on his CaughtOffside YouTube channel, Romano said: “It’s true that Virgil van Dijk’s agents were sitting next to Liverpool’s director of football, Richard Hughes, for the game against Tottenham. So, there is still a very good conversation, a very good relationship, between Liverpool and Van Dijk’s agents.”
While such meetings are standard practice, especially for players nearing the end of their contracts at top clubs, it offers a glimmer of hope that an agreement could still be reached.
Given Van Dijk’s ability to maintain his high standards beyond the 2024/25 campaign, Liverpool fans will be hoping both sides can find common ground.
The thought of the Dutch defender bidding farewell to Anfield in May is an increasingly real but difficult scenario to accept.
