Amid a season marked by close scrutiny of match officials and VAR, Liverpool has faced controversial refereeing decisions.

The PGMOL, criticized for significant errors, has issued numerous apologies to affected clubs. Howard Webb, PGMOL’s Chief Refereeing Officer, has appeared on television to address these mistakes and has proposed steps to prevent such incidents in the future.

One contentious call involved Diogo Dalot of Manchester United, who received two rapid yellow cards for dissent against Liverpool. Michael Oliver’s decision to send off the full-back late in the game has drawn criticism for potentially penalizing a defender for minor infractions while his team was safeguarding a clean sheet.

Fans will be relieved to know that VAR will not feature in the Carabao Cup quarter-final between Liverpool and West Ham on December 20. This absence during early rounds is due to certain clubs lacking the necessary technology at their stadiums.

To maintain fairness, the Premier League refrains from employing VAR during these stages, reserving its use for the semi-final and final at Wembley next year. The other three quarter-final fixtures include Everton vs Fulham, Chelsea vs Newcastle, and Port Vale vs Middlesborough.
