The present contract of Gareth Southgate as England’s head coach is set to end in 2024, therefore the FA may need to name a new one next summer.
Steve Cooper, Pep Guardiola, and Eddie Howe are considered potential successors.
According to 90min, the Football Association sees Eddie Howe, the manager of Newcastle United, as a strong contender to succeed Gareth Southgate as England’s manager should he step down next summer.
Although Southgate hasn’t decided on his future yet, the FA would ideally like to know his plans prior to the 2024 European Championships.
After England finishes as one of the favorites to win Euro 2024 after finishing as runners-up at the previous edition, Southgate’s current contract will expire in the summer of 2024.
As the only manager to lead England to a major final, Southgate is the most successful head coach of England since Sir Alf Ramsey. However, he will enter his eighth year of coaching next summer, and it is unclear if he will stay in the position.
The FA are willing to offer Southgate a new contract and are prepared to have a conversation with him, but they also want to ensure that they have a plan in place in case he decides to quit and don’t want to be caught off guard.
Because of this, 90min is aware that Howe’s name has already been brought up and that the FA is conducting due diligence on possible successors.
Under Howe’s leadership, Newcastle went from being relegation favorites to a Champions League team in less than two seasons. Even though he is the manager of the wealthiest team in England, Howe has accepted his position and is a very well-liked person in Tyneside.
Thus, it should come as no surprise that Howe’s name has been mentioned at the FA; yet, he is not the sole contender.
Pep Guardiola of Manchester City has long been considered as a possible successor should he determine it’s time to go away from club football, and according to 90min, the FA is impressed with Steve Cooper of Nottingham Forest.
The Welshman was previously employed by the FA as the manager of the England Under-17 team, which won the World Cup in 2017; many of the players from that team are currently in the senior squad.
