Following an incident during the first half of Liverpool’s 4-1 Premier League loss to Manchester City on Saturday, the FA has charged the team. Despite having an early lead thanks to Mohamed Salah, Arsenal’s championship rivals exploited the Reds, cutting the lead to five points for a short while until the Gunners reopened their eight-point advantage with a matchday victory over Leeds.
Julian Alvarez gave City the equalizer, and goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, and Jack Grealish in the second half handed Liverpool their worst league loss of the year. Even though five goals were scored, City midfielder Rodri was the talk of the town after he narrowly avoided getting a second yellow card for thwarting a Liverpool counterattack.
The Liverpool players begged referee Simon Hooper to dismiss the Spaniard after he had only been booked moments before that foul. He did, however, simply issue a warning to the visitors since the FA felt their complaints were too loud, and they were consequently punished with obstructing a match official.
According to the official statement, Liverpool FC has been charged for its players’ actions during the 34th minute of their Saturday, April 1 Premier League encounter versus Manchester City.
“It’s alleged that Liverpool FC failed to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly and/or do not behave in a way which is improper, and the club has until Wednesday 12 April to respond.”
The Gunners, who play Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, have already been hit with multiple FA charges this season for interfering with a match official. The club has been fined for events involving matches against Oxford, Manchester City, Newcastle, and Leeds.
In addition, there was mayhem during the rematch versus Liverpool after an altercation involving Gabriel Magalhaes and Jordan Henderson. The week following the argument, the FA reaffirmed that there would be no disciplinary action.
On Sunday afternoon, Mikel Arteta leads his club to Merseyside in an attempt to snap a losing streak against Liverpool. The last time the Gunners defeated Liverpool in the league at Anfield was in 2012, but this season is the perfect opportunity to break that record.
