Liverpool are reportedly closing in on the signing of Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz this summer—but Real Madrid could still disrupt the deal.
According to Spanish outlet AS, while Liverpool have already submitted their first official bid, Real Madrid are considering a late move to hijack the transfer. The Spanish giants have yet to make a formal offer, but the situation remains fluid.
Wirtz, 22, is widely regarded as one of the most talented young players in world football, and his potential move to Madrid would be a huge coup for the La Liga side. He has previously been described as “absolutely exceptional.”
Will Liverpool finalize the Wirtz transfer?
Liverpool will be eager to wrap up the deal quickly, especially with growing interest from Madrid. The recent appointment of Xabi Alonso—who played a key role in Wirtz’s development at Leverkusen—as Real Madrid manager could sway the player toward a reunion in Spain.
Though Bayern Munich were also keen on Wirtz, Liverpool convinced the player to reject the Bundesliga champions. The Reds see him as a versatile addition who can play centrally or out wide, offering both creativity and goals in attack.

With Real Madrid seeking additional creativity in the final third, Wirtz fits the profile of a dynamic playmaker. Given the club’s global stature, a firm offer from Los Blancos could be difficult for any player to ignore—Wirtz included.
