Erik ten Hag refrained from confirming whether Jonny Evans and Raphael Varane would extend their contracts at Manchester United, amid speculation of potential replacements arriving on a budget-friendly transfer to Everton.

This season, the defensive duo of Varane, aged 30, and Evans, aged 36, has raised more questions than answers.

Despite Lisandro Martinez being touted as Ten Hag’s top center-back, the unfortunate Argentine finds himself sidelined once again.

Martinez sustained a knee injury during the recent 3-0 victory over West Ham, potentially ruling him out for up to eight weeks. This setback follows his absence for a significant portion of the season’s first half due to foot surgery.

The center-back options are further bolstered by Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, both of whom fall short of being considered elite defenders.

Evans impressed during his preseason trial and subsequently earned a one-year deal with Manchester United last summer. Meanwhile, Manchester United chose not to activate Varane’s 12-month extension, leaving him without a contract at the end of the current campaign.

The decision to forgo Varane’s extension was influenced by the desire to avoid the hefty weekly wage of £340,000, amid debates over whether his performances justify such a salary.

Reports suggest that Manchester United and Varane may discuss a new contract with significantly altered terms, similar to the approach taken with David de Gea last season, although the goalkeeper ultimately left as a free agent.

When asked about the futures of Varane and Evans, manager Ten Hag remained noncommittal, stating, “We haven’t made the decision yet.”

Should they depart, Manchester United would need suitable replacements. As a result, there is speculation that the club may turn to Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly favors a more data-driven approach to signings, with Michael Olise and Branthwaite meeting the new criteria.

Despite Everton placing a hefty £100 million price tag on Branthwaite in January to deter potential suitors, the 21-year-old’s potential is widely acknowledged, with many tipping him for future England honors.

Manchester United’s interest in Branthwaite was first reported in mid-January, with suggestions that Everton’s relegation could lead to a discounted deal for the promising defender.

If Varane and Evans leave, Goodison Park could become a viable destination for Manchester United to secure a suitable replacement.
