Ten Hag clashed with Man Utd executives before signing the £115k per week player on deadline day.

Despite the club’s executives considered the idea of giving youthful talent Alvaro Fernandez a chance, Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, was desperate to clinch the signing of Sergio Reguilon, according to The Athletic (via The Sun).

Manchester United added three significant players to their roster on the last day of the transfer window. Goalkeeper Altay Bayindir joined from Fenerbahce, midfielder Sofyan Amrabat came from Fiorentina, and Sergio Reguilon joined from Tottenham.

A left-back crisis at Manchester United during the final days of the transfer window necessitated these signings. Due to their injuries, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia were both sidelined, leaving the team without any senior left-backs with experience. As a result, Brandon Williams and Alex Telles were permitted to travel on loan.

The Athletic claims that considering Alvaro Fernandez’s strong results in the development system, club executives at Manchester United were willing to give him a shot to compete for the left-back position.

Erik ten Hag disagreed with this strategy, thinking that strengthening the position required bringing in a left-back with Premier League experience. According to the source, Manchester United first wanted to sign Marc Cucurella on loan from Chelsea, but the deal collapsed after he played in the Carabao Cup.

In the end, the Red Devils decided to concentrate on Sergio Reguilon because they thought it would be easier to close the transaction. The story claims that Manchester United quickly acquired the Spanish left-back from Tottenham by agreeing to pay his entire £115,000 weekly salary without requesting a loan fee.

Alvaro Fernandez’s proposed loan move to Granada was approved as a result of this choice, and Erik ten Hag was successful in acquiring a left-back with Premier League experience when Sergio Reguilon joined Manchester United on deadline day.

Luke Shaw, who was essential to Manchester United’s success in Ten Hag’s first season in command, was heavily relying on in the previous campaign. Diogo Dalot had to step in at left-back for recent games due to the absence of both starting left-backs, but he didn’t look comfortable in that position.

Despite the difficulties the Spanish player has encountered since moving from Sevilla to Tottenham, Erik ten Hag was clearly determined to sign him this summer. How the 26-year-old will perform for Manchester United is yet to be seen.
