Pep Guardiola, manager of Manchester City, has commented on the recent VAR dispute surrounding Liverpool, in which Luis Diaz’s goal was wrongfully overturned in their match against Tottenham Hotspur. While admitting the error, Guardiola insisted that it must be recognized. He also expressed optimism for future officiating standards that will be raised.
After Diaz’s goal was ruled to have been offside because of a “significant human error” on the part of VAR officials, Liverpool found themselves in the center of a VAR-related dispute. The audio recording of the game clearly shows the confusion between the on-field referee and the VAR headquarters.
Jurgen Klopp demanded a rematch of the game in response to the predicament, which sparked a wider debate over the standard of refereeing. Guardiola, emphasizing that the error had been committed, avoided entering the current discussion in favor of focusing on the necessity of accepting the VAR decision’s result. He voiced optimism for future advancements in officiating standards.
“I said before the Champions League game, so it’s done,” he remarked. Accept it; it was a mistake, he said to the press.
“It’s always challenging; people can make mistakes, but machines must perform these tasks; the VAR is there to lessen that (mistake).” We all make mistakes as do other people.
“In the end, the machines had been (introduced) for humans, so it’s a mistake. Hopefully, it’s ended here, getting better and improving (from) that.
The Premier League or VAR personnel will get better at avoiding it because a fair game is why it’s there.
The VAR was put in place to improve our game, hopefully for the better in the future.
