Slot makes significant statement on Alisson’s selection as Kelleher impresses with ‘outstanding’ form.
Liverpool have faced several injuries this season, but Caoimhin Kelleher’s performances in Alisson Becker’s absence have eased some of the pressure.
After the victory over Aston Villa, manager Arne Slot spoke about his goalkeepers: “First, Alisson needs to be fully fit, and I’ve always said that, once he’s fit, he remains our first-choice goalkeeper
“But until then, Caoimhin [Kelleher] has been exceptional, both last season and this season. However, Alisson will return as our number one once he’s back to full fitness.”
With Alisson expected to be out until after the international break, a quick return seems unlikely.
Kelleher’s display against Unai Emery’s side again showcased his talent, and the best compliment is that Liverpool hasn’t felt Alisson’s absence.
Kelleher’s outstanding form has Liverpool leading the league, sparking discussions about his future. Despite his strong performances, with Alisson firmly in place as the primary keeper, the 25-year-old may seek more regular playing time elsewhere.
While Liverpool enjoys one of the world’s best backup keepers, the academy graduate’s long-term future might ultimately be outside Merseyside.
