Manchester United are intensifying their pursuit of a top-tier striker as they aim to solve their persistent goal-scoring woes ahead of next season.

Following another underwhelming campaign in front of goal, the club is reportedly preparing for a major revamp in the attacking department.

United have managed just 38 goals in 32 Premier League matches this season. At their current rate, they’re projected to finish with only 45 goals—potentially their lowest ever in a Premier League season, even below the 49 they recorded during Louis van Gaal’s disappointing 2015–16 tenure.

To address the issue, newly appointed sporting director Christopher Vivell has started work behind the scenes to secure a dependable No. 9.

He was recently spotted scouting 21-year-old Benjamin Šeško during RB Leipzig’s clash with Wolfsburg.

Šeško has emerged as a key target for United after registering 19 goals and six assists in 40 games this season, including four goals in the Champions League.

Since joining Leipzig from Red Bull Salzburg in 2023, Šeško has scored 37 goals in 82 appearances.

Internationally, he’s tallied 16 goals in 41 caps for Slovenia and was instrumental in their draw with England at the last European Championship.

Though there are claims of a gentleman’s agreement allowing him to leave for £60 million, Leipzig may push for up to £86 million amid strong interest from clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, and AC Milan.

Incoming manager Rúben Amorim is reportedly involved in shaping the shortlist of striker targets. Liam Delap, on loan at Ipswich Town, is seen as a more attainable signing, especially if Ipswich are relegated—activating his £40 million release clause.

He’s now considered a more realistic option than high-profile names such as Victor Osimhen, Viktor Gyökeres, or Hugo Ekitike.

Matheus Cunha of Wolves is also being monitored, though interest from Arsenal, Newcastle, and Aston Villa adds competition for his signature.

Meanwhile, United’s current strikers, Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee, have combined for just 14 goals this season despite a £110 million outlay. If needed, one of them could be included in swap deals to reduce the cost of acquiring a new striker.

With a major rebuild in sight, United are gearing up for a crucial transfer window that could determine whether they finally land the clinical finisher they’ve been missing—and begin their journey back to the top.
