As the drama surrounding Manchester United’s ownership draws to a close, golf legend Rory McIlroy has said that he would “love” to invest in the team.
It is understood by 90min that Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the founder of INEOS, has consented to buy a 25% share in the club. Although club shareholders must yet approve the sale, it is anticipated that Ratcliffe will be successful in obtaining a minority shareholding.
After joining, sources informed 90min, Ratcliffe would try to establish a new, three-person leadership group at the top of the team, consisting of himself, current United co-chairman Joel Glazer, and cycling expert Sir Dave Brailsford.
Childhood United supporter McIlroy, who is currently an investor in the Alpine Formula One team, stated in an interview with Sky Sports that, although the chance to participate in Ratcliffe’s attempt to acquire a share in the team did not present itself, he would have loved to have.
“Private equity and extremely wealthy individuals used to be the only groups allowed ownership of sports teams. However, athletes these days are growing more astute and making wise financial decisions.
“I would like having a small ownership stake in the team that I grew up supporting as a youngster.
“When Jim Ratcliffe took 25% of Manchester United, I would have delighted to have taken 0.00001% of the team. And I’ll take a look at another chance that presents itself. However, it hasn’t yet been brought up on our table.”
In addition, McIlroy stated that because of his affiliation with the Red Devils, he was presented with an option to invest in one of United’s fiercest competitors but declined it.
“Tom Brady plays for Birmingham, and Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, two golfers, invested with the 49ers Group and now control a small portion of Leeds. When they asked whether I wanted to join, I replied, “As a Man United supporter, I can’t go near that!” And McIlroy said.
“Everyone who supports United should be thrilled about the prospects if they grant Sir Jim complete sporting authority and decision-making power over the team. He has a stellar record.” I’m happy as a fan.”
