Liverpool’s return from the international break has been flawless, securing a thrilling victory against Southampton. The Reds initially took the lead with a goal from Dominik Szoboszlai in the 30th minute.
However, they found themselves under pressure early in the second half, conceding a penalty just before the break. The penalty, awarded after Andrew Robertson was deemed to have fouled Tyler Dibling, allowed Adam Armstrong to equalize.
The decision by referee Michael Oliver sparked controversy, as replays showed the foul occurred just outside the box. However, Premier League Match Centre explained that Oliver saw “no conclusive evidence” to suggest the foul happened outside the area.
Despite the setback, Liverpool persevered, with Mohamed Salah scoring twice in the 65th and 83rd minutes to seal the win. This victory has extended their lead to 8 points over second-place Manchester City, who suffered a 4-0 defeat to Tottenham.
Next up for Liverpool is a Champions League clash against Real Madrid. The Reds are in incredible form, having won all four of their group-stage matches, making them the only team in the competition with a perfect record.
Real Madrid, however, will be without Vinicius Junior for the trip to Anfield, after the forward sustained a hamstring injury in their 3-0 win over Leganes.
His absence is a blow for Los Blancos, though Kylian Mbappe is expected to step in on the left wing.
Real Madrid currently sits 18th in the Champions League table, with two wins and two losses, and will be hoping for a crucial result to push towards the knockout stages.
On a positive note for Madrid, Lucas Vazquez is set to return after missing their last La Liga match due to injury.
