Real Madrid have made an unexpected move to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold after he declined to sign a new contract with Liverpool.

Real Madrid have long been linked with Trent Alexander-Arnold, but it seems they are preparing a backup plan in case their pursuit of the Liverpool vice-captain falls through.

According to CaughtOffside, the 25-year-old remains Madrid’s top choice for a new right-back, especially with the Champions League holders encouraged by his contract at Anfield entering its final nine months.

However, in potential good news for Liverpool, Real Madrid aren’t solely focused on Alexander-Arnold. Sources suggest that if their attempt to sign him fails, they are looking at Tottenham’s Pedro Porro as an alternative.

Spurs are reportedly concerned about the Spanish defender being lured back to LaLiga, although they might entertain negotiations if an offer of €65m (£54.6m) is tabled.

Liverpool must not get too comfortable regarding Trent’s future. He remains Real Madrid’s primary target and will be free to negotiate a potential transfer to the Bernabeu in just three months if no new contract is agreed.

Although securing new signings was a priority for sporting director Richard Hughes during the summer, with the transfer window now closed for nearly five weeks, it’s expected that contract extensions for Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, and Mo Salah are now at the forefront of his agenda.

Liverpool’s strong start to the season could work in their favor. If Trent believes the club is still capable of winning major trophies, it could persuade him to stay.

In contrast, Porro may have more motivation to join Madrid, as Tottenham are less likely to win significant silverware, relying mainly on domestic cups and the Europa League to end their trophy drought since 2008.

Ultimately, if Liverpool want to erase any doubts about losing their vice-captain to Madrid, they need to resolve his contract situation swiftly.
