Premier League updates its VAR procedures following a Liverpool error

In order to prevent a repeat of the disaster that occurred during Liverpool’s match against Tottenham last week, the Premier League has announced a significant tweak to the VAR process ahead of this weekend’s games.

Following Liverpool’s’significant human error’ that cost them the opening goal in their 2-1 loss to Spurs last Saturday, the PGMOL and VAR have faced harsh criticism over the past week.

Due to a miscommunication between the VAR official and referee, Luis Diaz’s first-half goal was wrongly disallowed for offside.

After full time, the PGMOL apologized to Jurgen Klopp’s team in a statement, and Liverpool then formally requested the raw audio files from the PGMOL.

The PGMOL has made an announcement that it would alter the VAR protocol in order to prevent similar events in the future.

The VAR official must now check with his assistance before communicating his decision to the on-field referee.

In his news conference on Thursday, Klopp said that while a game replay would be a good resolution, it will never take place.

“It’s crucial that we actually handle it in a proper way. All of the individuals involved, including the referee, linesman, fourth official, and VAR, did not intend for it to happen. Yes, there was a mistake—a very clear mistake.
