Liverpool and Manchester City, known for their intense rivalry in recent years, appear poised to battle for the Premier League title again this season. Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola is reportedly eyeing a move for one of Liverpool’s former players.

According to *FootballTransfers.com*, sources claim that Guardiola has shown interest in Brentford defender Sepp van den Berg, whom he noticed during a 2021 pre-season friendly while the Dutchman was on loan at Preston North End. Since then, the young center-back has reportedly remained on Guardiola’s radar.

Van den Berg, who left Liverpool this summer after being deemed surplus to requirements by the Reds, would be an unexpected signing for Manchester City.

Some may question how Liverpool let the 22-year-old go, only for the reigning champions to express interest so soon after his departure.

This wouldn’t be the first time a former Liverpool player joined City—Scott Carson, a former Red, is already part of Guardiola’s squad.

However, a move to the Etihad seems unlikely, given that Van den Berg left Anfield in search of regular playing time, which City may not guarantee either.

The rumor also raises eyebrows considering Brentford matched Liverpool’s valuation for the defender during the summer, making it surprising that City would now consider prizing him away.

For now, this speculation seems to belong in the “unlikely to happen” category.
