Pearce: Injury boost leaves Slot facing right-back selection headache at Liverpool

Liverpool’s build-up to Sunday’s meeting with Burnley has been lifted by Jeremie Frimpong’s return, though his comeback also leaves Arne Slot with a tactical dilemma.

    Frimpong back, defensive decisions ahead

According to James Pearce of The Athletic, the Dutch defender rejoined training on Wednesday after missing two league games with a hamstring issue.

The £30m summer signing from Bayer Leverkusen was injured on the opening weekend against Bournemouth and stayed in Merseyside over the international break to complete his recovery.

While he’s impressed teammates with his pace and energy, his absence hasn’t been felt too heavily thanks to others stepping up.

Dominik Szoboszlai has excelled as a makeshift right-back in Frimpong’s absence, even earning Premier League Team of the Week recognition, while Conor Bradley has also regained fitness.

That gives Slot three strong options for a demanding run of six matches in 17 days across three competitions.

The Athletic noted that Frimpong was cleared to take part in Wednesday’s session, hinting at a gradual return rather than an instant starting role.

Isak trains, Gomez and Chiesa back in action

Another boost came with Alexander Isak training for the first time since his £125m switch from Newcastle United. After featuring briefly for Sweden this week, the striker is now bedding in with his new teammates.

Meanwhile, Joe Gomez and Federico Chiesa also trained after sitting out international duty, providing further depth as Liverpool brace for a packed schedule.

With major investments already made in Isak and Florian Wirtz, Slot’s squad management will be as important as the signings themselves in sustaining momentum this season.
