Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim expressed his frustration following his team’s 3-1 home defeat to Brighton, criticizing the players for frequently abandoning their assigned positions during the match.
Amorim, who has been implementing a 3-4-3 formation, stressed the importance of discipline, insisting that players stick to their roles instead of switching flanks at will.
He acknowledged the challenges of introducing a new system, especially during a poor run of form.
*“I knew it would be tough to implement a new idea,”* Amorim said. *“But when you’re losing and haven’t won three games in a row, it becomes even harder.
That’s why I’m telling the players we’re going to suffer because I’ll keep doing the same thing. I’ll give them the tools, but they need to stick to their positions.”*
Despite the team’s struggles, including creating just one shot on target—a Bruno Fernandes penalty—Amorim refused to abandon his 3-4-3 setup, emphasizing long-term development over short-term adjustments.
*“If I wanted to impress the media or fans, I’d play with two strikers,”* he explained. *“But I didn’t because it would confuse the players. We’re breaking bad records, and that needs to change. I’m here to help them understand how we play.”*
United’s tenth loss in 22 Premier League matches highlighted issues with focus and execution. Amorim pointed to a Brighton goal that stemmed from a play United had prepared for but failed to stop.
*“We need to be fully focused,”* Amorim said. *“Sometimes, the team seems distracted by other things. It’s a simple play, one we knew about beforehand. The only way to fix this is to work harder, win games, and gradually embed our ideas.”*
