For his special Daily Briefing column on Footballwave, Fabrizio Romano stated as much. Romano’s sources claim that Manchester United has not changed its plans.

The young Portuguese midfielder is being watched by the Red Devils, but it seems that Romano’s comments suggest that Neves won’t be the team’s first choice straight immediately. Since Raphael Varane has recently fallen out of favor with Erik ten Hag and Lisandro Martinez is now out with an injury, they will probably instead focus on strengthening their defense.

One could assume that United could use the acquisition of a winger, even though Romano pointed out that the connections with a right-back don’t particularly make that much sense given that United already has Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot as perfectly good prospects in that position.

Romano said the following about Neves’ interest: “McCann scouts saw Neves play against Sporting. They may want to keep an eye on him in the future to see how he develops and grows.

“I can vouch for the fact that Man United is among the numerous teams watching him closely.”

Regarding other potential targets, he said, “I’ve had some fans asking me about reports linking them with an interest in a winger and a right-back this January, but that’s not the information I have.”

“A center-back is their top priority for 2024, as I recently stated, and I think they have excellent coverage at right-back with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot.”

For MUFC, the season has been difficult, and they now have a high mountain to climb in order to get out of their Champions League group. Despite some encouraging victories in their recent few games, they have also been erratic in the Premier League and have not won the Carabao Cup.
