Liverpool and Newcastle Set for Transfer Battle Over Premier League Star
Liverpool and Newcastle United are preparing to go head-to-head for one of the Premier League’s top defenders this summer.
Newcastle had already attempted to strengthen their backline in the previous transfer window but fell short in their pursuit of Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.
The England international’s standout performances at Euro 2024 caught the attention of several top clubs, and since then, he has been closely monitored by teams looking to bolster their defense.
Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes both Liverpool and Newcastle are set to make a move for Guehi, but he sees the Premier League leaders as the favorites to secure his signature.
Liverpool Leading the Race for Guehi?
Speaking to Football Insider, Robinson explained:
“Liverpool would be an ideal destination for him. Crystal Palace won’t let him leave for free, so this summer is their chance to cash in.
With just 12 months left on his deal, his price might drop slightly—but with a potential bidding war, that may not be the case.
“Newcastle were aggressive in their pursuit last summer, and Palace will be looking for a similar fee again. They’ve handled Guehi’s development well, and both parties know the time is right for a move.
“It will come down to the highest bidder, and not just from the Premier League—he’ll have options across Europe. Steve Parish is known for negotiating tough deals, and this summer will be no different.
“With Liverpool’s limited recruitment in recent windows, they are in a strong financial position to invest. That puts them ahead in the race, as they have room to bring players in within PSR and FFP regulations.”
Liverpool Desperate for Defensive Reinforcements
With Arne Slot set to take over, Liverpool are in dire need of defensive reinforcements, especially given the uncertainty surrounding Virgil van Dijk’s future.
Their financial flexibility makes them well-positioned to pursue Guehi, potentially outpacing Newcastle in the bidding war.
For Crystal Palace, keeping their star defender will be a tough challenge. Guehi’s contract expires in 2026, and with just a year left on his deal after this season, Palace may have no choice but to cash in on him while they can.
