One of Liverpool’s upcoming opponents has suffered a significant injury setback ahead of their match against the Reds.

Arne Slot’s side kicks off a packed December schedule with a home game against Manchester City today, followed by a visit to St. James’ Park on Wednesday night to face Newcastle United.

The Premier League leaders are already dealing with several player absences for the trip to Tyneside, and Newcastle manager Eddie Howe may now have another major concern within his squad.

Newcastle faces injury worry ahead of Liverpool clash

Alexander Isak was forced off with a suspected groin injury during Newcastle’s 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

According to *Shields Gazette*, Howe described the issue as a “contact injury” and expressed hope for a quick recovery. However, the club awaits a detailed diagnosis for the £64m striker.

Newcastle also faced concerns over Joelinton and Dan Burn during the Palace game, but both completed the match and appear likely to be available against Liverpool.

Isak’s potential absence poses a challenge for Howe

While Isak’s availability against the Reds remains uncertain, the short turnaround and the initial severity of the injury make his participation doubtful.

Losing their top scorer would be a significant blow for Newcastle, especially with Isak and Harvey Barnes being the only players in Howe’s squad to score more than twice this season.

If the Swedish forward is ruled out, Howe may need to rely on underused options like Callum Wilson or William Osula, who have played a combined 164 minutes this season.

Alternatively, he might opt to deploy players out of position, such as Anthony Gordon or Joelinton, to lead the attack.

Newcastle faces an anxious wait over Isak’s fitness, and while his absence might make Liverpool’s task easier, it’s never ideal to see a player sidelined by injury. Here’s hoping for a swift recovery for the Swedish striker.
