If Barcelona and Frenkie de Jong fail to reach an agreement on a new contract, the club may consider selling him soon.
De Jong has been linked to a transfer to Manchester United for some time, but a deal has yet to materialize. If his future at Barcelona remains uncertain, he could leave as early as the summer of 2019.
De Jong’s current contract, which expires in 2026, still has two years remaining, and Barcelona is actively working to extend it.
According to Spanish outlet SPORT, De Jong has not yet responded to the club’s offer, and if he rejects it, Barcelona plans to sell him in June.
Similarly, defender Ronald Araujo, who has also been linked with United, has yet to accept Barcelona’s contract terms and is set to leave in 2026.
Barcelona’s focus is now on securing the futures of midfielders Pedri and Gavi, both of whom are “fully committed” to staying. If De Jong decides not to renew, these players could push him out of the team.
The report suggests that De Jong has attracted interest from Manchester United, Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain.
Throughout the summer, he was asked about his future amid rumors that Erik ten Hag was looking to reunite with his former Ajax teammate.
When asked if he would stay at Barcelona, De Jong replied, “Without a doubt, I’m very happy here with my family in Barcelona.
Hansi Flick wants me to play a key role, and we had a good conversation.”
Barcelona president Joan Laporta commented, “Leaving Barcelona would be the last thing he’d want. He’s told me many times how happy he is here. We’re delighted to have him, but we can’t prevent a player from leaving if that’s their wish.
However, I believe everyone wants to stay, and we want to keep everyone. No team has ever been just a fleeting presence, and we don’t want anyone to leave.”
